ABOUT THE SPECIES: Elk are a member of the deer family. As herbivores, elk feed upon a variety of vegetation including shrubs, grasses, sedges and leaves. Males and females live in separate herds for most of the year but during the fall they will come together in larger groups where one male will assert dominance over his “harem” of cows. During this rutting period males can become quite aggressive and it is important to be extra careful around elk at this time.
